- - - - | Antique Ephemera Legal Document 1788 Item # 3138 Click HERE to inquire about this item This is a wonderful antique legal document from 8 October 1788. It was an exciting time. A new Constitution had been prepared, and in only two months the very first meeting of the Electoral College would vote unanimously to select George Washington as the first president under the new regime. Perhaps all that was too much for Thomas Treat of Glastonbury, Connecticut, who perhaps spent too much time with CNN and forgot to pay his bills. Or perhaps he was simply broke. Whatever the reason, it appears from the complaint that Treat had borrowed 15 shillings tuppence (about $1.20 in modern terms) in 1785 from one James Jones and never repaid him. Jones is now asking for two pounds in damages plus costs. The document is an order to the Sheriff of Hartford County, Connecticut to apprehend Treat and bring him before the Justice of the Peace at an appointed time. It was tough to owe someone a dollar in those days! The piece is in good condition. The edges are rough (it has been double matted to preserve the antique appearance this roughness provides), and there is one crumpled spot on the right edge. Fortunately, this is on a blank portion of the piece so no writing is affected. Overall size is approximately 8 and three quarters inches wide by 10 and three quarters inches high. The piece itself is approximately 8 and one half inches by 6 inches.

- - | Antique Ephemera Lein for Interest Due Legal Document Item # 3139 Click HERE to inquire about this item Here is an antique legal document dated 16 June 1830. It is a writ addressed to the Sheriff of Middlesex County, Connecticut, to summons a man whose name appears to be Jake Kilsey (the handwriting is a bit ambiguous). Kilsey had signed a promissory note for nine dollars and never repaid it. He is therefore being asked to pay a total of twenty dollars in damages and costs. This is a very good return on money invested! The order is signed by Justice of the Peace Loomis before whom the case will be heard (assuming Kilsey can be found). This large, for the time, legal document is custom framed for your enjoyment. Overall dimensions are 12 inches by 15 inches. The document itself is 7 and one half inches by 11 and one half inches. It is in excellent condition with no tears or chips. It has been folded (it is a legal document and was folded in a particular way so that the case title would appear on the top panel). The crease marks are, therefore, an authentic part of the document. This is an excellent collector's item for layman or lawyer.

- | Antique Ephemera Legal Document Connecticut Item # 3140 Click HERE to inquire about this item Here is another interesting Civil War document. It is on the letterhead of the General Headquarters State of Connecticut, Adjutant General's Office. The Adjutant General is requesting that Samuel Hubbard, Esq., a Selectman of Middletown, provide the numbers of men enrolled for the army. The date is 7 august 1861, only seventeen days after the disastrous Union defeat at first Bull Run. It was clear by then that the war would not be over in a few days or even weeks. Lincoln had already called for 75,000 volunteers, and any more would be enlisted. By 1865 the United States Army would become the largest in the world. This document represents the first drop of what would become a torrent of military expansion. The piece has been custom framed for your enjoyment. Its overall dimensions are 12 by 15 inches. The document itself is 7 and one half inches by 9 and one half inches, and it is in excellent condition. There are no chips or tears and the handwriting is specially clear and legible. The piece has been folded as it was apparently sent through the mail. This is an excellent Civil War collector's piece.
